1. Client Overview
- Company/Industry/Sector
As part of the North Sea decommissioning project, the North Cormorant topside was transported by heavy lifting vessel, Pioneering Spirit, to Dales Voe in Shetland for dismantling by approved contractors Brown & Mason.
Pioneering Spirit is the world’s largest and most versatile heavy-lift construction vessel, capable of lifting entire offshore platform topsides up to 60,000 tonnes and jackets up to 20,000 tonnes in a single operation.
Key challenge or goals they were facing
Onshore power supply was required to provide all temporary power to Brown and Mason’s specialist hydraulic equipment to move the Ninian Northern platform ashore from the transfer barge was required.
2. The Challenge
- The specific details, problems or pain points
Providing the most suitable generators, along with the required associated equipment, including fuel, to ensure trouble-free, reliable power supply. Timely delivery to site with final installation and commissioning provided as part of our service, with ongoing 24hr support included if required to keep client’s project on track.
- Why it was important to address
Any delay to the planned phases of this project due to power supply or equipment failure would incur substantial additional costs for our client, so it was important we provided a suitable package.
3. Objectives
The successful transit of the North Cormorant platform from the barge/quayside to its final positioning on the decommissioning pad, which all went to plan.
4. Solution
- Provision - What our company provided
After careful consideration and calculations, we supplied the following:
- 2x 500kVA Synchronising Diesel Generators (Caterpillar C15)
- 1x 150kVA Diesel Generator (Caterpillar C7.1)
- 1600A Synchronising Switchboard
- 800A Distribution Board
- Sub-distribution and cables
- 4500 litre fuel tank and hoses
- 500 litre AdBlue tank
- Delivery to site and final installation and commissioning
- High-level technical elements
The client required reliable temporary power for site requirements including the critical power supplies to the hydraulic equipment moving the platform across the quay to the decommissioning pad. The client also needs cable to supply distributed elements of the power system.
- Unique approach or innovation
The client had proposed a complicated distributed generation system with multiple generators across the quayside with back-up generators alongside and unconnected. Our team were able to determine that a combined distribution system, fed from two paralleling generators, would provide the required level of security of supply, with the back-up contingency, that our client would need, for a safe and effective operation.
5. Implementation
- Brief timeline or process overview
We provided proposals and agreed solution three weeks before it was put into use, with any modifications to equipment for this bespoke application being made in the lead up to the hire starting.
- Key actions taken
Our client had direct access to our engineering services manager and technical teams should support be required, with on-site checks completed on an ongoing basis.
6. Results & Impact
- Quantifiable outcomes
The initial phase of moving the North Cormorant topside from the flotation barge onto the decommissioning quayside went without incident, was completed on schedule and ongoing work is also being supported by our on-site equipment.
- Qualitative benefits
Our equipment has kept the initial phases of work on track for our client and eliminated any potential additional costs.
7. Customer Quote or Testimonial
8. Key Takeaways / Call to Action
- Summary of how we helped
A high-capacity temporary power solution, with built in redundancy, was provided to support this ongoing, very large and complex decommissioning activity.
