1. Client Overview

  • Company/industry/sector

Our client required a reliable power source to keep their service depot building running during power outages.

  • Key challenge or goal they were facing

During power outages, their existing generator had insufficient power to support their general operations which included the important role of gritter operations - clearing roads in severe weather conditions.

2. The Challenge

  • The specific problem or pain point

The existing building was single-phase supply which limited options for a higher-capacity generator solution.

  • Why it was important to address

Although the building was fitted with a 63A plug and manual changeover switch, the generator available to the client was of insufficient capacity to keep the depot working during power cuts.

3. Objectives

  • Desired outcomes or success criteria

The desired outcome was to provide an economical and effective power solution that was reliable all year round to keep operation running consistently even during extended power outages.

4. Solution

  • Provision

A single-phase diesel generator was sourced to make maximum use of the existing 63A plug and changeover switch without the need for building modifications.

  • High-level technical elements

This generator was sourced to provide the maximum output capacity for single-phase. Hire generators available in Shetland had the level of capacity required but need a three-phase connection to the premises. Converting the building to a three-phase option which came with additional product and building cost implications our client wished to avoid.

5. Implementation

  • Brief timeline or process overview

The generator was specified and sourced through one of our trusted suppliers. Once the client purchase order was placed, the generator was delivered to Shetland and a suitable 63A trailing socket was fitted. The generator was delivered to the clients’ depot three weeks after the placement of their order.

  • Key actions taken

During the period the generator was required, there was a heavy worldwide demand on the specific range of equipment required, but we were able to source, negotiate, reserve and transport the generator to Shetland to keep the requested project delivery timescale on track.
